Doctor Mark - News
‘Doc I have high cholesterol what should I do?’ For the last few years the answer given, has been to take Lipitor, or a related statin drug. Is this the best course of action? If not what should a person do? In this article we want to hit the highlights behind this cholesterol fad. First ask yourself the question, why do I care about cholesterol? Pause for a second. I have heard because my doctor says its bad, or because commercials tell me how important it is. For some people that get down to the core of it, they realize that we care about cholesterol because we are convinced it is tied to heart disease. More correctly we feel that it is the cause of heart disease. If that is a fact, cholesterol is worth battling. If that is not the case then we may be fighting the wrong enemy.
Fever is so important to children. Yet parents have been trained to give Tylenol at the first sign of fever. Here is a quick primer on what a fever actually is.
Most of the time a fever is your bodies response to an infection. When the body has not been able to deal with an infection in it's first lines of defense your immune system starts to get serious. Remember Invaders can not be allowed to stay. To that end it brings out the big guns of which one is changing the terrain the war will be fought on to the advantage of your body and immune system. YOU have a much greater ability to adapt to temperatures than most invading bugs do. When you take medication to lower your temperature you UNDERMINE your bodies ability to fight the fever. The analogy would be that stopping a fever would be like blowing up your own tanks and fighter jets.
NOTE IF YOU HAVE A FEVER YOU SHOULD NOT DEAL WITH IT ALONE. The reason for this is that if you are suffering from one of the more severe infections you could quickly spike a fever. If you are alone this can be dangerous. For more information on fever look at the links below and download the brochures. Also you can email me at chiro@doctormark.com - put fever in the subject line.
Manitoba Health has a great brochure for those who are more afraid of fever than I am. There guidelines are in children over 6 months call health link when the fever reaches 39 degrees Celsius. Note that is just to call the health link not necessarily to give medication. Click her to download.
